On September 14th, the Primetime Emmys will unveil their winners of the 2024-2025 television season while the Creative Arts Emmys take place tomorrow September 6th and the next day September 7th. Three big thoughts come to mind immediately when looking over this hefty list of nominations: Severance, The Pitt, and The White Lotus will duke it out in almost every Drama category, Stephen Colbert is destined for a lot of love (and an inevitable standing ovation), and (fingers crossed) we will hear a lot of shout-outs to Sal Saperstein.
In reference to the first, it will be an incredibly tight race with all three shows being phenomenons in their own right. The Pitt, hot off an explosive debut could The Handmaid’s Tale itself to a win in its first season. The White Lotus could retrieve the crown it once had after winning Limited Series two seasons back (when it was just a limited series). Severance, though, still feels like the prestige pick, and a way to honor the series after its obvious loss to Succession‘s final season. While, Severance has the edge, The Pitt does seem likely to at least achieve wins in the Lead Actor category and Writing for its pilot episode.
While Hacks managed to steal the thunder away from The Bear with its tremendous third season, it seems the people (or at least the industry) has a new obsession with The Studio. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s brainchild Hollywood-set series was an instant hit and seems like a shoo-in to bag wins in multiple big categories, leaving shows like The Bear and Only Murders in the Building potentially empty-handed (Hacks will always have Jean Smart).
The Limited Series category will see a likely Adolescence sweep, though Colin Farrell still feels like a safe bet for a Best Actor win for his villainous and transformative role in The Penguin. Milioti has a tight, but probable shot to win for her tragic but magnetic antagonist role in Sofia Falcone/Gigante, but Michelle Williams may also be the more comfortable and sympathetic pick for Television Academy voters for her heartbreaking but luminous performance in Dying For Sex.
