The Golden Globes, our favorite problematic awards show, is set to announce their film, television, and now… *holds back vomit* podcast nominations. Yes, they may have changed their voting body to reflect more serious options and international titles, but deep down, they are still the same Globes at heart. To get that repulsive new category out of the way, one that if it needs to exist, should be acknowledged by a voting body like The Grammys, given podcasts mostly not a visual medium, rather audio. Yes, there is an episodic nature to podcasts, but if that constitutes itself as television, than why aren’t variety/talk shows honored with Globes, which is the closest equivalent? Why argue about this? Well, it’s a waste of time to fit during an already 3-hour show. Sure, this is Amy Poehler’s Globe to lose, given her competition ranges from undesirable to morally-insidious, but must we stoop this low for her sake?
In the television categories, do expect the Emmys love for The Pitt to absorb into its next round of end-of-the-year trophies. Yes, with the second season right around the corner, set to debut the week of The Golden Globes ceremony, the (literal) heart-stopping medical drama looks set to win another battle against juggernaut Severance. Coming up the rear though, with its premiere season still airing weekly in this moment is Pluribus, which should bless the overdue, under-appreciated Rhea Seehorn with a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Series, against this year’s Emmy winner Britt Lower. Task, announced for a season two, moves out of Limited Series and into Drama Series while final seasons of Andor and Stranger Things see if they can get one last shot at getting nominated. You thought Adolescence was done picking up prizes? With The Penguin a nominee last year, and no further competition since, Adolescence might make a total clean sweep with not a sweat.
As we’ve seen with the last few years in the film categories, the Globes voting branch has been far less celebrity-obsessed and more internationally-embracing, with their nominations feeling far more honest in choice than an excuse to get A-listers in a room. NEON in particular may have all of their four big titles (It Was Just An Accident, The Secret Agent, No Other Choice, and Sentimental Value) represented in the Drama and Comedy/Musical categories, thanks as well to the awards group dropping their long-standing “foreign films/animated films in main categories are ineligible” rule a few years back. It is still up in the air where the Globes fall with The Secret Agent though, despite its mighty Brazilian advantage, the film for early voters had not been available to screen, making the film vulnerable due to a lack of eyeballs. With that, we may see some reliable-to-predict nominees be left out of certain acting categories because (despite the 6-nominee as opposed to 5 categories) the competition is really that crowded, specifically in Best Comedy/Musical. Yes, that category still runs into cries of fraudulence with many serious films with a “specific” sense of humor, using the “comedy” distinction to weasel in ahead of films with a more consistent laugh ratio. Films such as If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Blue Moon, Marty Supreme, Roofman, Rental Family, Song Sung Blue, Bugonia, Sorry Baby, and the easy frontrunner One Battle After Another stomping over films like The Naked Gun, Friendship, The Phoenician Scheme, Splitsville, and The Roses.
Then, there’s the big question mark of Avatar: Fire & Ash. The first film winning the Best Picture-Drama prize in 2010 and the second film a nominee in Picture and Director nominee points to this franchise being a big favorite to both old and new Globes voters. First screenings begin on Monday December 1st and instant reception may determine if the love shall extend to the third film. With “projections” counting as box office performance for films released after the voting window, it should be a shoe-in for a Best Box Office Achievement nomination (yes, the other “dumb” award), while Sinners, another shoe-in could decide to pull a Dune Part Two and focus its sights on Best Picture-Drama and not even submit for the Cinematic Achievement nomination. While I can’t seem to find any confirmation on that, Dune’s exclusion last year was a surprise and with Sinners being WB’s best shot in the Drama category given One Battle will be in Comedy, they might try to get as many films nominated as possible. Not submitting Sinners for Best Box Office Achievement only makes room for Weapons, A Minecraft Movie, Mickey 17, Final Destination: Bloodlines, and Superman to squeeze in, acknowledging the pretty incredible year they’ve had.
